S1 fuel cooler!...what??
Discussion
Bit of a coincidence !!! I was just about to post a topic on fuel coolers aswell.
I am currently finishing the rebuild of my 1988 S1 and it is also fitted with a fuel cooler in the return line. The small air / fuel radiator looks like a standard air / oil radiator and I thought it was an aftermarket, home made, bodgit installation - but now I've found out somebody else has one, perhaps not?
The radiator on my car is mounted on a short length of angle iron crudely welded to the front crossmember behind the main radiator.
Does anybody else know why or if one should be fitted -I wasn't planning on putting it back but now I'm not so sure! I've certainly never seen any mention of it in the parts catalogue or any other book.

I did wonder if it was to do with curing vapour lock problems, but my cooler is located in the return line to the tank. Would the cooler not be best loacted in the feed line?
Do any ordinary production cars have fuel coolers -I've never come across one myself and I wasn't aware that the 2.8 capri or sierra ever had one. If they didn't, you wouldn't expect the S1 to need one?

Seen fuel coolers on 2 or 3 S1's.
I believe there were hot starting issues and fuel vaporisation when running at low speeds in hot climates (not likely in the UK then!)
I had fuel vaporisation in my S3 at altitude in Verbier in the summer a few years ago, and contemplated a fuel cooler, but have lagged the engine bay now so no longer an issue.
Fuel (in fact, any) coolers, as V8S says, are best fitted where a maximum temperatur difference will be, i.e. fuel is hottest and air coolest, so in the return line to the tank is very suitable.

Glad I found this thread, as I have just found what I thought was an oil cooler, although its not plumbed in to anything and I was pondering how to attach to the oil system as it is not covered in the bible. The two pipes fitted are not attached to anything else and ends are bunged.
Had the car for about 3 - 4 months now and done 3000 miles with out a problem (that's jinxed it ) so I think I'll leave well alone.

I know thread is pretty old, but where is this thing fitted. I could do with one last January (summer in this part of the world) I suffered from a vapour lock in the fuel pump while heading up a very long windy hill with thew temperature in the mid 30s (C). Mind you everything was hot, water temp, me, the passenger etc. Still a short rest and a downhill run and awat we went.
Photo of oil cooler location on my car.

Its not plumbed in and the car runs ok. Usual TVR disclamer applies "yours may be completely different". Please ignore the rust just starting on the winter re-furb effort.
